In our class discussion yesterday, the question arose as to whether or not President Obama had much in common with Dr. James Cone. If there are differences between them, are they more about style than content? Could they be a kind of "good cop, bad cop" team working toward the same goal? Or might their differences run much deeper?
At the end of our session, I found myself wishing that we'd had a couple or three African-American voices in the Mellinger Room on Sunday morning. Wow! I wonder how the conversation might have gone if that had been the case. Wait a minute—I know! What about setting up a session to watch Dr. Cone's presen- tation again, but this time with our sisters and brothers at St. James' Church over in the Third Ward? Double wow! … Then my next thought was: "But I want Barack Obama to facilitate that session!
There is perhaps one question for which we can begin to find an answer—how does President Obama relate to the issues of Black Liberation? The topic hasn't been at the forefront of his campaign for the presidency nor, as far as I know, has he invited James Cone to the White House for any kind of chat. But he has said some things that make his position clear.
See the next post.
